Archive Email: Can't Add Personal Gmail Account in Outlook

A student receives an error when they're trying to add their Gmail account in the Outlook desktop app to archive their Outlook emails, following the recommended step in the above instructions:

This error occurs because in Google blocks the applications that use less secured sign-in technology.

After getting the error, the student should have received a "Critical Security Alert" email in their Gmail account:

Go to https://myaccount.google.com/security , and turn on access for less secure apps (This can be turned back off later after they're done with archiving).
Note: their 2-Step Verification might be turned on as well and may also cause the error. Turn off if needed.
Go back to the Outlook desktop app and click Add Account.
Enter the Gmail address > Advanced options > check Let me set up my account manually > Connect
Click POP or IMAP and enter the password.
