How to find a Bitlocker Key for a UCLA account
While Anderson does not use Bitlocker, registering for Microsoft Office 365 Education (ProPlus) can add Bitlocker to an alumni's system.
Bitlocker is probably triggering because an update was made to the user's device that made the OS look different in some way. This broke the connection between their harddrive and their Bitlocker stored Key.
So if they don't know the key there are ways to try to circumvent this without losing your data.
First, the tired and true method of "turn it off and on again". If they haven't done so yet, we would recommend that and see if the OS sets up correctly next time.
Second, there are two places they can find their recovery key.
Active directory domain services- this is for corporate devices.
They won't, however, use their UCLAloginID@ucla.edu but in fact their UCLAloginID@personalmicrosoftsoftware.ucla.edu
See below the guide on setting up the account to begin with.
Registering for Office 365 Education
- Go to the Office 365 Education sign-up page at: https://signup.microsoft.com/signup?sku=Education
- When prompted for your school email address, please use the following format: Your_UCLA_Logon_ID@PersonalMicrosoftSoftware.ucla.edu
DO NOT input your @ucla.edu/@g.ucla.edu or @department.ucla.edu address here. Doing so will result in an error message "Your IT department has turned off signup for Office 365 Education. Contact them to complete signup" and require that you start the process over again. For example, if your UCLA Logon ID username is jbruin then you would enter jbruin@PersonalMicrosoftSoftware.ucla.edu. This is a special email address that forwards to your @g.ucla.edu (Google Apps for UCLA) email address and is only used for registering for and logging into your Office 365 Education subscription.
So if a student gets a bitlocker key notification, they will need to login to their Microsoft software account and doing so will show their bitlocker key.
The the user will need to click on the "View Account" here you will see the devices associated with that account and the bitlocker key will be there.
